Five on Friday: Heat Protections for Workers
We made it to the end of the week! Here are five recommended reads from MCN staff on this scorcher of a week, plus one weekly win. Stay cool this weekend!
Lots of internal conversation and article sharing around the leaked report from a Texas State Trooper who felt the treatment of migrants at the US-Mexico border was “inhumane.” Kim sent around the CBS News reprint of the trooper's full email, which includes shocking specific accounts. Amy sent in a tragic story of a teenager dying on the job, saying that "a teenager went to work at a dangerous job and will never come home. The tragic death of this young worker underscores that our efforts to roll back our child labor laws are not about giving kids an opportunity to explore work. It's about exploiting immigrant children." 16-Year Old Killed in Meat Processing Plant
Del forwarded on the LA Times article on the review of the recent death of an eight-year-old girl in Border Patrol Custody. Court Monitor: 8-Year-Old’s Death in Border Patrol Custody Caused by ‘Series of Failures’
Del also forwarded on Amanda Gorman's recent piece in the New York Times, a discussion of the migrant ship that capsized in the Mediterranean, killing hundreds, that reminds Gorman of the slave ship the Zong, followed by a poem. “By writing an elegy through the words of history, I hope to unearth, or unwater, the dead from beneath a mass of waves.” In Memory of Those Still in the Water
Weekly Win: Celebrate! The state of Washington updated its heat protections for outdoor workers, which went into effect this week – just in time for another hot week. Amy forwarded on the fact sheet detailing the new rule. Hopefully more states will follow suit with strong protections after this terribly hot summer. Outdoor Heat Exposure Rules Adopted
