Five on Friday: Fewer Families Access Food Assistance
Tomorrow is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and Google has a cool map that will show you the nearest prescription drop off point based on your zip code. Good for people and the environment! (Thanks, Giovanni, for letting us know!) As you head into your weekend, take a few minutes to read a selection of articles from MCN staff that you may have missed:
Amy shared this excellent reporting from Idaho Statesman on what a pesticide exposure really looks like on the regulatory and business side: “Farmworkers Fell Ill After Alleged Pesticide Exposure. ‘It’s Going to Keep Happening’”
Del shared a Millbank Quarterly paper that analyzed block grants and per capita caps’ impact on health center financial health, which concluded: “By 2024, in states where Medicaid coverage was expanded under the Affordable Care Act, block grant funding for Medicaid would decrease total health center revenues for the expansion population by 92 percent.” The piece also summarizes the history of Medicaid expansion up to the present.
Alma in Massachusetts shared a UN News article, “Ingredients for a New Life: How Cooking Helps Refugees and Migrants Blend In.”
Jess shared, “‘They Go to Work, Come Back, and Starve.’ Why Immigrant Families Are Avoiding Food Assistance,” from Civil Eats.
Weekly Win: Marysel sent over “Las personas trans tendrán más tiempo para apelar denegatorias en FEMA.” After Hurricane Maria, at least seven trans people were denied when their documentation didn’t match their gender presentation; others were denied if there were inconsistencies in their documentation, for example if one had been updated and another hadn’t. This extension gives them time to update documentation before applying for aid.
Have a safe and healthy weekend.
