Five on Friday: Labor Rights Week
Labor Day Weekend caps off National Labor Rights Week, which coincided this year with the anniversary of UFW’s march on the Texas Capitol. Thank you to the migrant laborers across the country -- farmworkers, custodians, construction workers -- who are often overlooked during our Labor Day festivities but make up an essential part of our economy and our culture. Here are a few articles that were recommended by MCN staff this week. Enjoy your three-day weekend!
Nestor sent in the Boston Globe piece, “‘I feel like I’m signing my son’s death warrant.’ Children at Boston hospitals face deportation.”
Giovanni recommended the New York Times op-ed, “What Will Indefinite Detention Do To Migrant Kids?”
Amy sent an article from The Center for Public Integrity titled, “Lawsuit Seeks Court Action to Prevent Deaths and Neglect in ICE Detention.”
Del recommends subscribing to Protecting Immigrant Families’ email list for the great rundown of resources around public charge, the Flores Settlement, and more, like their resource, Getting the Help You Need, in Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, and Chinese and many more on https://protectingimmigrantfamilies.org/.
Weekly Win: Art helps us process our reality -- and it also documents events in digestible forms. Claire recommended Art Hack’s comics and arts portraying the thoughts and motivations of participants at Tuesday’s Oakland protest against the new rule on public charge. Do you paint, write poetry, or do other art to help you through your work as a migrant clinician? Let us know and share your work, for a chance to be published in our in-print clinical publication, Streamline. Email Claire at chutkins-seda@migrantclinician.org for more information.
Have a safe and healthy weekend.
