Five on Friday: Voces Fuertes
It’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. Lead poisoning is the most common disease of toxic environmental origin among children in the United States today -- and the risk of lead exposure remains disproportionately high among children who are poor, African American, and/or Hispanic. Among those least studied are mobile Hispanic children, who have numerous additional social determinants that may increase their exposure to lead and decrease their ability to get health care. Check out MCN’s lead resources, including “Lead Guidelines for Primary Care Providers Caring for Migrant Children,” on our lead resources page. Look for numerous lead poisoning prevention resources out this week, including the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit’s two-part course, “Firearm Marksmanship and Adolescent Lead Exposure.” Want more news and views? Here are five recommended reads from MCN staff for our weekly Five on Friday.
Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health, recommends, “As temperatures rise, advocates fear heat's effects on Florida's farm and construction workers,” which features Dr. Linda McCauley.
Amy also shared the disturbing New York Times article, “Miscarrying at Work: The Physical Toll of Pregnancy Discrimination.”
Alma, Senior Program Manager, sent in, “Effect of Community Health Worker Support on Clinical Outcomes of Low-Income Patients Across Primary Care Facilities”
Here’s a submission from one of MCN’s board members, Evelyn Clingerman, PhD, RN,CNE, FNAP, sure to raise some social media eyebrows: “No justice without love: why activism must be more generous.”
Jillian, Director of Education and Communication, invited us to join her in Berkeley tonight for the Voces Fuertes benefit concert for MCN! San Francisco Bay Area friends, come support MCN and an amazing group of young activists.
Have a safe and healthy weekend.
