Ventanilla de Salud Coordinator / Health Network Associate

MCN

Originally from Veracruz, Mexico, Roxana Pineda (she/her) completed a Master’s in Public Health with a specialization in Community Nutrition from the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. In 2018, Pineda joined Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) to coordinate the Consulate General of Mexico's Ventanilla de Salud in Austin, Texas. In 2020, she expanded her role to supervise the Eagle Pass and Del Rio Ventanillas de Salud as well.

Since joining MCN, Pineda has excelled in coordinating numerous health promotion and preventive service delivery events that meet the health care needs of the migrant community and underserved populations in Austin and the many surrounding counties. In her role, Pineda organizes health fairs every Friday in which services such as vision, kidney, sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol screenings, and mammograms are provided free of charge for the community. She also organizes vaccination clinics and diabetes workshops. To support the mental health of her community, she organizes MCN’s annual Women's Conference, in-person in Austin, as well as monthly virtual Charlas entre mujeres, in collaboration with the Ventanillas de Salud in Del Rio and Eagle Pass.

With her deep knowledge and connections to the community in which she lives and serves, Pineda has cemented strategic alliances with educational institutions and public and private sector health agencies that have allowed her, over the years, to expand the preventive services offered by the Ventanilla and reach a greater number of people who might not have access to these services otherwise.  The impact and excellence of her work has been recognized by the Institute for Mexicans Abroad and by the Mayor of the City of Austin, Steve Adler for her outreach and education services as well as the vaccination of thousands during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was also recognized in 2023 by the National Kidney Foundation for her support and commitment to education, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease and for helping expand the Foundation's outreach to the Latinx community nationwide.

In her role as supervisor of the Ventanillas de Salud in Eagle Pass and Del Rio, Pineda supports, collaborates, and observes the process of the work being done to have a global overview of the impact and evaluate its effectiveness. She is also responsible for bridging new agencies, organizations, and institutions that can provide services in the areas covered by the Ventanillas.

Through her work with the community, Pineda has also participated in research projects with the University of Texas at Austin, co-authoring the following publications: Exploring Why Adult Mexican Males Do Not Get Vaccinated: Implications For COVID-19 Preventive Actions" and “Facilitating Care for Latinx Individuals at Risk for CKD: A Pilot Intervention, Respectively.”

In her spare time, she enjoys restoring wooden furniture, painting pottery, collecting coins, shopping, and going to the movies and concerts.
