Five on Friday: Response Plan for Puerto Rico
Happy Friday to you! We made it through another nail-biter of a week in migrant health, and we’re grateful to roll into the weekend at long last. Here are five articles that MCN staff members shared this week that may have been smudged out beneath the election headlines.
Marysel, Puerto Rico Program Manager, shared “Government Lawyer Says Puerto Rico's Hurricane Response Plan 'Does Not Exist.'”
Alma, Senior Program Manager, shared the interesting new study, “Planning for a Resilient Urban Food System: A Case Study from Baltimore City, Maryland.”
Alma also shared the press release about a new study that concludes that “Florida Construction and Farm Workers Endangered by Heat This Summer.”
Claire, Writer and Editor, shared the Civil Eats article, “A New EPA Rule Would Allow Factory Farms to Avoid Reporting Air Pollution.” Food & Water Watch is quoted: “These pollutants have killed farm workers and residents because of the hydrogen sulfide and other emissions.”
Giovanni, Communications and Graphic Designer, offered up John Oliver’s late-night comedy take on a seriously un-funny topic: family separation at the border and the fumbling of the case management, which has led to missing children. Because it’s horribly foul-mouthed and crude at times, we’re not including the link, but it did lead us to this more straightforward update: The Hill’s “Trump administration miscounted number of separated children.” You can also read the New York Times opinion piece that Oliver referenced, about a mother whose 5-month-old was separated from her. When she finally got the baby back, the authorities handed her the wrong baby.
Have a safe and healthy weekend.
