The Mesothelioma Information and Resource Group (MIRG) is an organization created to assist patients, family, friends and loved ones in learning about mesothelioma and other asbestos-related injuries.

The first section of the document is tailored to each Collaborative Topic (diabetes, cancer, etc.) with suggestions for how CHWs can promote significant outcomes within a variety of measures. The second section includes a grid describing roles for CHWs in five of six components of the Chronic Care Model, aligned with already-established Change Concepts such as "Set and document self-management goals collaboratively with patients." This month's highlight, Peer Support for LTBI Treatment Adherence and Completion: Training Curriculum and Facilitator’s Guide, from the Charles P. Felton National Tuberculosis Center, is designed for training treatment adherence supporters. Background information on approaches to adult education and evaluation, as well as suggestions for pre-training preparation, are provided for planning and implementing a training course.

Gardasil® is the first vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer and genital warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). In June 2006, Gardasil® was licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the FDA monitor the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine.

Current News is our focus for March and April. The Surveillance Summary for Acute Viral Hepatitis released in March indicates declining rates of all three common types of Hepatitis, A, B. and C. Underlying the good news is the continuing importance of making sure that adults, especially in segments of the population still living outside of the reach of most health care systems, are screened, offered B vaccination, educated about risks, and tested as necessary.

These recommendations represent the first statement by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on the use of a quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on June 8, 2006. This report summarizes the epidemiology of HPV and associated diseases, describes the licensed HPV vaccine, and provides recommendations for its use for vaccination among females aged 9-26 years in the United States. We would like to draw your attention to a new Self-Management Support resource. The Assessment of Primary Care Resources and Supports for Chronic Disease Self Management (PCRS) is a tool developed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Diabetes Initiative to further define the elements of self management support in primary care. Its purpose is to facilitate quality improvement in this component of the chronic care model. Also available is a PowerPoint presentation that provides some background and information on how to use and score the PCRS Tool.
