First 100 Days: Kim M. Nolte, MCN's new CEO, on How You Can Help Us Move Mountains

[Editor’s Note: Our new CEO, Kim M. Nolte, MPH, MCHES, has finished up her first 100 days with MCN! And what a very busy three months it has been. In this mini-series, she offers her perspectives on Migrant Clinicians Network and the world of health justice. Read the first two installments of this series here and here.]

Every day, when we tune into the news, we are confronted with so much tragedy and trauma in the world—from the pandemic, mass shootings, climate disasters, fighting in the Ukraine and Sudan and elsewhere, and of course migration.

It’s hard to realize there is also so much goodness and generosity in the world at the same time. It’s not front-page news, yet people do want to make a difference in both big and small ways.

It never ceases to surprise me how generous and eager people are when given the opportunity to make a difference.

Just three months ago, I took on the role as the new CEO of Migrant Clinicians Network to follow in the footsteps of Founding CEO, Karen Mountain, who retired after 36 years at the helm. Karen is a giant in the field of migrant health. With her strong leadership and tenacity, she built MCN from the ground up with its three founders to the impressive international organization it has become. MCN now has 50 talented employees spread across the US, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, who have themselves become national and international leaders in migrant health.

To celebrate Karen’s accomplishments and establish an individual donor program, we invited those who know us best to join our Moving Mountains Campaign and become an inaugural member of the Founders Circle. Founders Circle Members commit to providing on-going support to MCN for at least three years. Members have special curated opportunities to interact with our leadership and experts to see their investment in action.

We were blown away by the swift response in which people joined the Founders Circle. MCN’s friends were eager to honor Karen and help us carry her legacy forward, tackling tough situations created by inequities and compounded by migration.

We were thrilled when we not only reached but surpassed our initial goal of raising $50,000 in time for Karen’s Retirement Celebration. Karen can enjoy her retirement knowing MCN will be in good hands, stewarded not only by extraordinary staff, but also by a generous group of individuals committed to Moving Mountains with us.

Migration should never be an impediment to good health. MCN works diligently to reduce the burden of migration by creating practical solutions for clinicians and others who serve migrants, immigrants, and asylum seekers. If you haven’t joined us in Moving Mountains yet, we’d love your support! A gift of any size will make a difference in helping us improve the health of those who are most vulnerable.
