Justice for migrants and immigrants is always on the minds of MCNers, and as we approach the International Day of the Migrant on the 18th, it's time for another Five on Friday. This week we look at World Cup, the rights of women and asylum seekers, and of course, a little about COVID.

Monica brought to our attention grim news coming out of Qatar, where Amir Nasr-Azadani, an Iranian soccer player, faces possible execution “after campaigning for women’s rights and basic freedom in his country.”

Renée sent a study with the remark “our moms were right after all,” linking cold exposure to weakening immune systems. Remember to bundle up and keep warm this winter!

Morocco was the first African and the first Arab nation to make it to the semi-finals of the World Cup! Amy sent an article framing their victory over Spain through the lens of anti-colonialism. Amy noted that “Morocco may have lost to France in semi-finals, but they won our hearts.”

Kaethe sent in a weekly win coming from Maine. Portland, South Portland and Brunswick could add up to 175 units of housing for asylum seekers. This could help families secure work authorization and their immigration status according to Greg Payne, a senior advisor in the Governor’s office.

A week with two wins! Amy told us that the government will be resuming its strategy to send free COVID tests directly to your front door as part of its strategy to combat COVID-19 this winter.
