It’s been a busy week in the world of migrant health. Here are a few news pieces that caught the eye of MCN’s staff:
- Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health: “Immigrants are an important part of the poultry labor force. Check out this new Oxfam report.”
- Candace,Specialist in Clinical Systems & Women’s Health, quoted from Audit: Children Working on North Carolina Tobacco Farms, on an audit that found that “40 percent of farms surveyed employing minors were not complying with federal law. In addition, a portion of those minors was performing hazardous work.”
- Del, Director of International Projects, Research, and Development, shared the Department of Health and Human Services announcement of a final rule requiring nondiscriminatory practices in health care under the ACA.
- Paul, Finance Associate, offered up this article on the future of 3D printing to “develop cheaper and more democratic medicine, particularly for developing parts of the world.”
- Kerry, Environmental and Occupational Health Program Manager, sent us the following: “New York State is renouncing a loophole in federal labor laws that left farmworkers unable to organize without threat of retaliation. Governor Andrew Cuomo said, ‘We will not tolerate the abuse or exploitation of workers in any industry. This clear and undeniable injustice must be corrected.’”
