Up to the Challenges | 30 Days, 30 Clinicians
[Editor’s Note: Happy Birthday, Migrant Clinicians Network! To celebrate our 30th anniversary this month, we are highlighting one clinician each day who has been honored in 30 Clinicians Making a Difference, in which we profile the work of 30 diverse migrant clinicians from across the country and abroad. This week, we are featuring the five honored clinicians located near MCN's Salisbury, Maryland office.]
Earlier this week, MCN’s Specialist on Child and Migration Health and Bioethics, Jennie McLaurin, MD, MPH, MA, visited Choptank Health Center in Maryland, where she and a team were conducting an operational site visit. Sue Hagie, NP, at Choptank, was featured as one of our 30 Clinicians Making a Difference. Dr. McLaurin saw firsthand Choptank’s diverse outreach programs for the Eastern Shore’s migrant population, like the region’s agricultural workers on local watermelon farms, factory workers in canneries, and crab pickers working in refrigerated seafood processing plants.
“Their entire staff is committed to improving migrant health,” commended Dr. McLaurin, who noted as evidence that their after-hours clinic providing medical and dental screening is run by providers from Choptank who attend the clinics on a volunteer basis, as it’s outside normal hours of operation.
Choptank continues to take fresh looks at their community to determine ongoing, new needs. For example, Choptank’s new clothing collection program, noted Dr. McLaurin, provides quality hooded sweatshirts for the crab pickers, primarily immigrant women, who shiver even on the hottest summer days, while working in 40-degree refrigerated units all day.
Dr. McLaurin also met with Shelley Andrews, Director of Community-Based Programs and Marketing, who had nominated Ms. Hagie for 30 Clinicians Making a Difference. In her nomination letter, Ms. Andrews said that, “Sue’s tireless dedication to her patients was evidenced... on a patient satisfaction survey. When the patient was asked if the provider treated them appropriately, they answered, 'Sue is like Jesus.' I don’t think she could have received a higher compliment.” Read Sue Hagie’s complete profile here.
