Bio

Karin Hopkins de Egüez (Kari) serves as the Manager of MCN’s Domestic Violence Initiative. In this position, Kari is responsible for the MCN Family Violence Initiative which is aimed at ending familial interpersonal violence in the migrant and immigrant community through community and clinical interventions.

Prior to her work with MCN, Kari served as a Peace Corps and Crisis Corps Volunteer in Paraguay and the Dominican Republic. She spent two years as a University of Michigan Population Fellow with USAID in La Paz, Bolivia. While in South America, Kari also worked as a consultant for HelpAge International and CHF-Bolivia. In the United States, Kari worked with migrants as a State of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Migrant Specialist and as an “Infórmate” site coordinator for Migrant Health Promotion. Most recently she worked for Communities Overcoming Violent Encounters as a bilingual outreach worker for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in northwestern Michigan. Other interesting jobs have included teaching Spanish language and cultural diversity to adults and children, and working her way through college as a carpenter.

Kari received her BA in Cultural Anthropology from University of Michigan, and an MPH in International Public Health from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Kari has traveled to over 25 different countries on 5 continents through work, study, conferences or just for fun. She has also been to all but 7 of the 50 United States. She is currently looking forward to visiting Mexico for the first time.

When not at work, Kari likes to hike, swim, and go to concerts with her husband and baby. Lately they have been exploring their new city of Austin, TX. She also loves kayaking, snorkeling, camping, photography, drawing, making stained glass and reading fiction.
